Iran, which has an average annual precipitation of 250 mm per annum as opposed to the global average of 750 mm, is considered as one of the world’s semi-arid countries.

The western and south-western summits of the Zagros Mountain which contains some 30 % of surface water resources, is home to the country’s largest water basins.
Precipitation in the summits of this region which is classed as one of the country’s regions with the heaviest rainfall, is mostly in the shape of snowfall in the fall and winter.
This snow begins to dissolve between the end of winter and spring and this supplies the annual water of this region’s rivers which in summer feed the subterranean spring waters and irrigation springs.
The most important water basins of this region consist of the Karkhe, Karun, Dez and Sirvan water basins.
