Tangab Dam

13 Nov 2011 14:32

The structure is designed to save and regulate some 103 million cubic meters of water on a yearly basis in order to contain runoff water for irrigation purposes.

Tangab Dam is located 12 km to the northwest of Firoozabad on the Firoozabad River. It is at 28º 57' northern and 52º 32' eastern. The river arises from Hanifghan springs with a total discharge of between 2.5 and 5 cubic meters per second. In all, 32 springs with varied discharges feed the river. Runoff water flowing across Shoorab, Mahkooyeh, Zanjiran and Jookan plains join the river along the way. In the vicinity of Mahkooyeh the river passes through Halaloo and reaches the site of the dam five km downstream. It then flows its way into the Firoozabad Plain.

A look at the history of the dam

Phase one of feasibility studies on Tangab reservoir dam got underway in mid-March 1981. Fars, Bushehr and Kohkiluyeh Boyer-Ahmad Regional Water Company awarded the studies contract to Ab Niroo Consulting Engineers. An earlier round of studies by Taleghani Consulting Engineers and Justin Courtney Office merely focused on the water and soil potential based on short-term figures. After the technical office of the Energy Ministry approved the first phase of studies a second phase got underway in 1993. A review of the irrigation and drainage system and how Tangab reservoir dam should be optimally used started in 1995 and a report on phase two of studies was presented to the contractor in February 1998.

Objectives

The structure is designed to save and regulate some 103 million cubic meters of water on a yearly basis in order to contain runoff water for irrigation purposes.
The capacity of the free weir of the dam stands at 3,000 cubic meters per second. In order to build the weir some 65,000 cubic meters of rock and 90,000 cubic meters of soil have been removed from site. An additional 85,000 cubic meters of concrete was used in construction of the structure.

History of the dam
The diversionary dam was built by the Infrastructure Service Development Company in 1995. Construction of the dam and nearby facilities got underway by Eveyol Construction Company in 2002. The alternative road tunnel which measured 610 meters in length was built by Payab Kowsar Company and the replacement road which stretches 10.2 km began to be built in 2000 and completed in late July 2003.
