ISLAMABAD: The textile mills in the country can provide about 2000 megawatt of electricity, if the government offers them same rate for purchase of electricity that WAPDA has finalised with gas-based Independent Power Plants (IPPs).
Mohammad Iqbal, chairman All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, said that about 400 members of APTMA agreed to provide electricity at no profit basis and just on the cost of generation.
To help WAPDA in overcoming its shortcoming of energy APTMA offered to provide surplus power from its member's captive power plants running on furnace oil and natural gas.
All Pakistan Textile Mills Association says WAPDA has offered to purchase power from gas based power generation units of textile mills at the price of 4.15 rupees per kilowatt, which is below their production cost.
Mohammad Iqbal says APTMA members can provide about 500 megawatt to Lahore Electric Supply Company and 300 Megawatt to Karachi Electricity Supply Company on immediate basis.
Iqbal says the power plant of textile mills have already connected with the national grid and not required investment on transmission connectivity.
APTMA wants to bring the issue in the notice of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani that if the government offers suitable rates to textile, sugar and other industry, the electricity shortfall of 3000 Megawatt can easily be managed.
