The project, the second of its kind in the country, has been undertaken by Greater Tehran Electricity Distribution Company under the supervision of Iran New Energies Organization.
Smart meters have been programmed to measure consumption at residential units and businesses and the company also plans to install them at Tehran’s Alaeddin Shopping Center and Martyr Chamran Residential Complex.
The project to install smart meters is designed to manage consumption and reduce electricity waste. The system enables electricity companies to read the meters from a distance, analyze consumption data and quality at distribution grids, manage electricity waste and control consumption.
It also minimizes the possibility of unauthorized handling of the grid, limits consumption at peak hours and enables officials to disconnect and reconnect consumers from a distance.
Deputy Energy Minister for Electricity Mohammad Behzad encouraged distribution companies to make widespread use of smart systems in a bid to control and manage consumption and said in light of the fact that Greater Tehran Electricity Distribution Company covers the capital it should take the lead in this regard.
He said application of modern technology paves the way for sustainable supply of inexpensive electricity and secures consumer satisfaction at the same time. “The infrastructure needs to be developed prior to implementation of such projects. “Given the complicated nature of electricity distribution grids, priority should be given to cementing the infrastructure and developing the grid in parallel with such projects.”
Mohammad Behzad added measures to tap into common opportunities and encourage the consumers to contribute to sustainable supply of electricity are part of the electricity industry’s strategies. “In addition to improvement of productivity, deployment of smart systems makes it possible to develop electricity grids and improve their reliability.”
Recalling energy consumption hikes in the country and the high costs associated with electricity production, the deputy energy minister said smart metering systems could play an important role in striking a balance between electricity production and consumption. “Thanks to efforts by officials and the industry personnel such balance is already in place. Despite a rise in temperatures this summer over last year and a subsequent 18% hike in consumption across the nation, supply of electricity remained unaffected.”
