The history of the hydroelectric development of the Karun River dates back to 1961-1970. At that time a series of studies were carried out on the Karun River basin in order to identify the possibilities to develop this river’s water resources. Following feasibility studies in 1990, a decision was made to begin the implementation of a project build the Masjid Soleyman Hydroelectric Power Plant with a capacity of 1000 MW (which can be increased to 2000 MW).
This project was carried out on the Karun River some 26 kilometres further down from the Karun Dam (Martyr Abbaspur).

Dam specifications:
The Masjid Soleyman Dam has the following specifications:
Height: 177 metres
Crest length: 480 metres
Capacity of the Dam body: 14 million cubic metres

Geology:
A large area of the dam and reservoir covers the Bakhtiari rock formations. The Bakhtiari formation consists of top stones consisting of a hard outer surface and very thin middle layers of clay.
