Electricity export to Iraq to hit 1,000MW

A newly commissioned power transfer line connecting Karkheh dam to al-Emara in Iraq will increase power exports to Iran's western neighbor to 1,000 megawatts (MW) per year.

Majid Salehi, managing director of Iran Power Development Company (IPDC), noted on Monday that Tehran and Baghdad had agreed to finish the 400-kW electricity transfer line by the end of summer  which consequently  the electricity export to Iraq  will increase to 1000 MW yearly.

Once finished, the line will take 1,000 MW of electricity per year to the Iraqi city which can be further increased to 1,150 MW upon the request of the Iraqi side, he added.

Iran had a total annual electricity generation capacity of 53,000 MW before 2009, which exceeded 61,203 MW last March as a result of the country's plan to add 5,000 MW of capacity to the grid annually. The country's total power generation capacity currently stands at 63,403 MW.

The total length of the power grid also increased by 26,000 km last year to exceed 770,000 km. The network is now more than 780,000 km long.

Iran currently exchanges electricity with Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan, Nakhichevan, Turkey and Turkmenistan.

The total electricity exchange with neighboring countries reached 1,341 MW in late December 2010. The top exporter was Armenia with 237 MW and the top importer of Iranian electricity was Iraq with 650 MW.

Iran, which seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity, has attracted more than USD 1.1 billion in investments to build three new power plants.
