The country's energy basket has to be diverse and value has to be given to the use of new energies in the country .Whilst stressing on this fact, the Energy Minister Parviz Fattah has once again reiterated on the need to use renewable energies in the country's electricity industry.
Expert studies show that due to its specific geographical position, Iran is one of the world best countries in terms of the exploitation of new and renewable energies. New or renewable energies consist of the solar, wind and geothermal energies. Some measures have been taken for the use of these three energies in the country's electricity industry.
The construction of solar power plants will help us take advantage of solar energy. According to experts, there are two methods for transforming solar energy into electrical energy.
One method is the absorption of solar energy by parabolic trough collectors and the production of steam which is then used for the production of electricity through the use of steam turbines.
The second method is the direct transformation of solar energy into electricity which can be conducted in solar power plants. In this method, electricity is directly produced after the sun shines directly onto semi-conductive surfaces called photovoltaic systems.
The project for the construction of the 250-KW Shiraz Solar Power Plant, with parabolic trough collectors, is being implemented in the country. This will help the use and transformation of solar energy into electrical energy.
Construction and mechanical work such as clearing operations, the construction of necessary buildings and installations, and the purchase of the power plant's mechanical equipment, have been completed. The wind farms’ wind turbines are going through the testing and implementation stages.
The construction of the Binalud and Dizbad Wind Power Plants in Khorasan Province are examples of other projects which are being implemented in order to create diversity in the country's energy resources through the use of wind power plants in the electricity industry. These two power plants contain 43 wind turbines with a capacity of 28.4 MW.
The development and optimization of the Manjil Wind Power Plant from 60 MW to 90 MW is being carried out. In addition, some 500 MW of electricity will be produced at the Binalud wind farm, which is being developed by the private sector. In addition, a 100 MW wind power plant is being constructed by the New Energies Development Centre affiliated to the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization’s New Energies Organization. Moreover, the 260 KW Dizbad Wind Power Plant is being constructed by the Agriculture Ministry
Geothermal power plants run on geothermal energy. This energy resource is not faced with time and seasonal restrictions. Currently, 8000 MW of electricity in the world is produced through the use of these energy resources. In Iran, geothermal energy is used at a 100 MW power plant in Ardabil’s Meshkin Shahr region to produce electricity. This energy has been produced through the use of exploration wells which are nearly 3000 metres deep. This power plant is being constructed with the use of the country’s best technical and engineering potentials.
Considering the above facts, the use of new and renewable energies will result in the maintenance and enhancement of the country’s electricity industry’s potential in the production of electricity.
