The installed power plant capacity in the southwestern province of Khuzestan stood at 11,533 MW as of mid-March 2011, with thermal facilities generating 2,383 MW, hydroelectric power plants producing 7,844 MW, and private power plants generating 1,306 MW.
Forecasts by the Meteorology Organization suggested on eight summer days temperatures would rise above 50 degrees in Ahvaz, so far nine days have seen such sweltering heat in the provincial capital. That translates to summertime power consumption in the province rising to 6,810 MW, an 8% growth over last year.
A first wind turbine capable of generating 660 kW has been installed in Mahshahr, near a 400 kW substation.
In light of the fact that the wind turbine has proved highly efficient in the province, more such turbines have been ordered to be installed elsewhere in the province.
