Iraqi Electricity Minister Raad Shalal Saeed said with God’s grace and through Iranian cooperation his country will overcome the electricity shortage it is currently grappling with.
Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony during which Tehran and Baghdad signed an electricity cooperation agreement, the Iraqi minister called for closer ties between the two neighbors.
As for electricity shortage in his country, Shalal Saeed said expansion of transmission lines taking electricity across the border is sure to make power shortage in Iraq a thing of the past.
He put the electricity generation capacity in his country at 5,000 MW. “An additional 1,000 MW is imported from Iran.”
The Iraqi power chief said demand for electricity in his country stands at 12,500 MW, adding power plants capable of generating 11,000 MW are under construction.
He said new power stations are to become operational in 2013. “That means power supply problems will persist until 2012. Iraq though is hopeful to ease those problems through the assistance of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
