Summer Consumption Peak Came and Passed; 4,000 MW in Reserve

When consumption hit its peak, the country had a 4,000 MW electricity reserve; 2,000 of which came from hydroelectric power plants and the remaining 2,000 MW from thermal power plants

Deputy Energy Minister for Electricity Mohammad Behzad said that talks have been held with the private sector to set up power plants capable of generating close to 50,000 MW. Negotiations on generation of 20,000 MW are almost final, while talks on construction of additional facilities to produce 15,000 MW are ongoing.
He further said this year’s consumption peak of 41,014 MW came on July 9. “Thanks to measures taken to ensure uninterrupted supply, consumption was perfectly managed in the country.”
He went on to say in light of the fact that there was no unexpected hot spell before the holy fasting month of Ramadan during which consumption usually posts a decline, the energy machine has been successful in the summer.
“When consumption hit its peak, the country had a 4,000 MW electricity reserve; 2,000 of which came from hydroelectric power plants and the remaining 2,000 MW from thermal power plants,” Behzad said.
As for future electricity plans of the ministry, he said when consumption drops after the holy month, the commissioning of new plants will be placed on the Energy Ministry’s agenda.
He said this year [ends March 20, 2012] some 5,000 MW is expected to be added to the country’s electricity grid. “Power plant units capable of generating 1,000 MW are already operational. Units producing the remaining 4,000 MW will come on stream by yearend.”
In conclusion, he said talks have been held with the private sector to set up power plants capable of generating close to 50,000 MW. “Negotiations on generation of 20,000 MW are almost final, while talks on construction of additional facilities to produce 15,000 MW are ongoing.”
